Hays Lodgepole, MT — Students in Mr. Shawn Moorman's 1st and 4th period biology classes at Hays Lodgepole High School are diving into hands-on science this quarter by dissecting fetal pigs. This challenging project is designed to deepen their understanding of the body’s systems, and so far, students are eagerly embracing it.

Throughout the week, students have been examining the pig’s anatomy system by system. Mr. Moorman begins each class with an overview of a specific system—such as the veins and heart—before students gather in groups to dissect, locate, and study these structures in their assigned specimens. Working together, they follow instructions from their textbooks, ask questions, and assist one another in locating various organs and tissues.

“The fetal pig’s anatomy is similar to that of humans, which makes it an ideal starting point for students,” Mr. Moorman explained. By starting with pigs, students gain an in-depth, relatable look at how the body’s systems function, an experience that brings their studies to life in a tangible way.

Despite the educational excitement, one element has proven challenging: the strong smell of formaldehyde. Yet, students have pressed on enthusiastically, taking turns and navigating each dissection with determination. When asked about the experience, students shared that they enjoy learning about the body and appreciate the opportunity to explore something new and challenging.

Looking ahead, students have voted to dissect sharks next week, an exciting step that will allow them to compare different anatomical structures across species. This hands-on approach has students engaged and eager to learn, and Mr. Moorman’s biology class is buzzing with discovery.
